Maybe you’ve heard about harpy eagles, if not, no matter. We'll talk about it, too.

But, for the name harpy, there is a mystery hidden behind.

A terrible mystery which people don't know.

So in today’s article, along with other mind-blowing facts, we're gonna talk about the legend of the eagle’s name.

So let's meet the harpy eagle!.

FIRST SIGHT OF THE HARPY EAGLE

It was 1758, and native people of the southern jungles saw a creature, a huge creature, with a tremendous beak and a gigantic body.

A crown at the top. At first sight they cried out, harpy. It is harpy. The legendary harpy!. It was the time when the creature was discovered.

WHO IS HARPY?

Who or what is Harpy?. Actually, the harpy was a mythical and fictional creature with the head of a woman and the body of a giant bird.

In Greek mythology, they were considered to be stealing children from their mothers at night while they were sleeping.

The Harpies were considered to be evil spirits who would often steal food from native people.

They would also snatch up people and carry them off to the underworld.

The word “harpy” means “snatcher” or “seizure” in Greek language.

GIVING THE NAME ON HARPY

It was the time when the father of taxonomy, Carl Linnaeus, was alive.

Due to its solitary behavior, the Harpy eagle remained a rare and mysterious creature until Linnaeus described it in his book ‘systema naturae’.

Due to its size and appearance, He named it after the mythical creature ‘harpy’. That’s why it’s scientific name is 'harpia harpyja'

Very few people know about this fact, but the harpy eagle is named after the ‘harpy’

MATCHING A BEAUTIFUL BIRD WITH AN UGLY CREATURE?

So why would such a beautiful bird be named after something so ugly?

Some say it’s because of the way the harpy eagle looks when it flies. It holds its wings up like a vulture does when it’s soaring.

Others say it’s because of the way the bird sounds when it screams. It sounds like a woman screaming, they say.

Another reason for relating them to mythological creatures is because of its own hunting habits..

The eagle perches high up in a tree and waits for its prey to come close enough before swooping down and snatching it up with its powerful talons.

"A harpy eagle can even snatch a monkey from a tree."

SOMETHING ABOUT THE EAGLE

So, buddies, we talked about harpies in our article, now, let's talk about something about the real creature!.

The harpy eagle is one of the top predators in the rainforest. It’s an apex predator, meaning nothing preys on it. (except humans).

That’s why this powerful creature is called “the flying tiger” or “the queen of the jungle”.

According to Britannica, the harpy eagle is the strongest of all eagles.

With a height of 3.5 feet and a wingspan larger than a man, it weighs about twice as much as a bald eagle.

THE MONKEY EATER

Using their horrible talons, they usually prey on rodents, fish and macaws.

But sometimes, they even snatch up a sloth or a monkey. Incredible! (see img.)

HARPY EAGLES HAVE TALONS LARGER THAN A BEAR!

As for ‘harpies', the harpy eagle, too, has gigantic talons. About 5 inches in size, they have the largest claws among the birds.

you'd not believe that harpy eagles have talons even larger than a bear's claws!

DO THEY HARM HUMANS?

Usually, they sit on branches ( 43 meters above the ground there), and let the people pass away.

But according to their strength and size, a harpy eagle can crush a human skull like a grape!, and tore into the kidneys even in the leather protection!

A BBC filmmaker once said, “Most birds of prey are frightened of humans, but this one is not”.

If it wants, with its 20 pound weight lifting ability, it can lift away a human toddler!.

HARPY EAGLES ARE IN DANGER!

Personally, the harpy eagle is my favorite among all the birds.

But sadly, they are near threatened. Due to loss of habitat Caused by the human activity.

And also because of some bounty hunters for their luxury and precious feathers.

CONCLUSION:

So, buddies, in this article you read how harpy eagles got their mysterious name after the harpies.

You further read how it can easily kill a human, and crush down its skull. Along with other mind-blowing facts
