THE TORTOISE WHICH HAS SEEN THE BOTH WORLD WARS!
Do you know about a tortoise who has seen, the invention of the bulb, the first rocket to fly to land on the moon, and even the two world wars. And even survived the challenged disaster?
And is still alive today?. Yes, meet the oldest known land animal. Jonathan.
WHO IS JONATHAN THE TORTOISE?
Actually, Jonathan is a species of Aldabra giant tortoise who is enjoying his old life in St. helena; he hatched in 1832- 1837 and was raised by a farmer.
At the age of 50, thought to be fully grown, Jonathan was sent to the island of Saint Helena, along with his other friends, as a gift ( a weird gift) to the governor of that island.
HE LIVED LONG THERE
But, as time went on, people began to pass away; the crew who brung him, his caretakers, and eventually, the governor of the island, said goodbye to life.
His friend tortoises which were also brought there, died too.
But Jonathan lived, lived for decades, and centuries. The world began to change, the people, the kingdoms, the maps. But he was still there.
THE PERIODS HE HAS SEEN
Now, let’s talk about what periods have passed in Jonathan’s lifetime,
He saw the cold war. The Russian Revolution was in his lifetime. Before 1879; there was darkness on earth as lamps were used to light the streets and houses.

After 1879, he saw the world glow due to the invention of the bulb. People think that he could have met Napoleon because he resided in Saint Helena.
He was also alive when Neil Armstrong took his first step on the moon.
First, his pictures were taken with color-blind cameras, and now, he is filmed by hd video cameras.
"Jonathan the tortoise is 190 years old"
WHY HE LIVED TOO LONG
Tortoises live longer than any other reptile because they eat mainly plants. They also have a slow metabolism, meaning they burn fewer calories than other animals.
Now, you are thinking, that the highest lifespan of a tortoise of his species is 150 years, but he is still living at the age of 190? What’s the secret behind his life?
Scientists think that these species of giant tortoises can kill the damaged and useless cells and generate new ones, thus protecting them from diseases and allowing them to live longer.
But we can’t find a certain answer over the broadest lifespan, among other land animals.
WHY HE WAS NAMED JONATHAN?
Due to the ancient origins of the tortoise, it was not confirmed.
Some think it is named after a British explorer. And some think that he is named after the biblical character jonathan.
HE LIVES IN A GOVERNOR HOUSE
Since 1882, when he was gifted to the governor of the island, he has been living there in Saint Helena, and enjoying the greenery of the plantation house.(what a protocol!)
